Right On The Money

Robert MorleyColumnist

Right on the Money

October 20, 2009 | From theTrumpet.com

Do you remember the following words? They are coming true before your eyes today!

“Can you realize how fast events are happening in the world?

“You have seen that the U.S. dollar—long thought of as the stablest currency in the world—is in immediate jeopardy of being devalued!

“That means that it will take you more dollars to buy the same amount of imported goods. If the dollar is devalued, inflation will almost surely result—and eventual economic collapse for the United States.

“Those of you who truly believe the prophecies of your Bible know such economic collapse is prophesied to happen!

“And now, in almost daily news, comes the frightening development of a rush on gold …. What does this all mean? It means that at any time now, you could suddenly awake to find you have only about half the ‘money’ you thought you possessed—or that your purchasing power has been drastically reduced, overnight!

Should the dollar collapse, it could well mean a repetition of the disastrous depression that strangled the economic world in 1929!

“The final crisis is fast descending upon us.”

Accused Inside Trader Is Bear Stearns Alumni

As the fraud trial of two former hedge-fund managers from Bear gets underway, the former head of their division gets arrested in the Galleon insider-trading scandal

By William D. Cohan, contributor

NEW YORK (Fortune) -- The $20 million insider-trading ring that the U.S. government alleges was masterminded by billionaire hedge-fund manager Raj Rajaratnam also included two former Bear Stearns hedge-fund managers. According to two federal complaints, two of Rajaratnam's partners in the alleged crimes were Mark Kurland, of Mount Kisco, N.Y., and Danielle Chiesi of New York City. Both Kurland, 60, and Chiesi, 43, were arrested last week, along with Rajaratnam, and charged with insider trading. Bail for Kurland was set at $3 million and for Chiesi at $2 million (Rajaratnam's was set at $100 million).

War is not so much a matter of weapons as of money. This was said by the founder of the realist school of international relations, Greek historian Thucydides. His famous History of the Peloponnesian War, the war between Athens and Sparta in the fifth century b.c., stressed the influence of political leadership and war on the existence of civilization. He also observed that wealth is essential for a civilization to dominate.

Blagojevich Fundraiser Found Dead

By Jesse Solomon and Justin Lear

Police are investigating the death of the former chief fundraiser for ex-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich as a “death-suicide,” an Illinois mayor said Sunday.

Financier Christopher Kelly told police shortly before he died Saturday that he took an “overdose of drugs,” said Dwight Welch, mayor of Country Club Hills, Illinois.

Country Club Hills police found several drugs in Kelly’s black 2007 Cadillac Escalade, but they were not sure yet whether they were prescribed, Welch said. Country Club Hills is about 27 miles south of Chicago.

Kelly had recently undergone surgery and was taking drugs following the operation, Welch said. Welch said he did not know which drugs Kelly was taking.

Kelly, 51, of Burr Ridge, Illinois, was pronounced dead at Stroger hospital in Cook County at 10:46 a.m. Saturday, hospital spokesman Marcel Bright told CNN.

* Step could be aimed at wooing left-wing voters

By Hans Busemann

BERLIN, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Germany's Social Democrats (SPD) have unveiled plans to push for a global tax on financial market transactions, in an apparent attempt to win over left-leaning voters weeks before election polls suggest they will lose.

Steinbrück Seeks Global Tax

By Bertrand Benoit in Berlin , Financial Times, 11 Sep 2009

Germany's finance minister has called for a global tax to be imposed on financial transactions in an effort to end what he derided as "binge-drinking" on markets.

In one of the more radical steps mooted by a world leader to reform the financial system, Peer Steinbrück said receipts from the tax would be used to repay the cost to governments of tackling the crisis, including fiscal stimuli and bank rescue operations.

***REMEMBER***

#1. REASON TO SAY NO TO GLOBAL GOVERNANCE:

Global Central Bank corruption, fraud and abuse with no accountability

***

Switzerland Number 1

United States Number 2

Old Models Must Change For Economic Recovery To Be Sustainable

Switzerland tops the overall ranking in The Global Competitiveness Report 2009-2010.

The United States falls one place to second position, with weakening in its financial markets and macroeconomic stability. Singapore, Sweden and Denmark round out the top five.

European economies continue to prevail in the top 10 with Finland, Germany and the Netherlands following suit.

The United Kingdom, while remaining very competitive, has continued its fall from last year, moving down one more place this year to 13th, mainly attributable to continuing weakening of its financial markets.

The rankings are calculated from both publicly available data and the Executive Opinion Survey, a comprehensive annual survey conducted by the World Economic Forum together with its network of Partner Institutes (leading research institutes and business organizations) in the countries covered by the Report.

Dollar Gets Roughed Up In Unusually Heated World Economic Forum Panel

Among the more interesting moments of the World Economic Forum that wrapped up Saturday in Dalian occurred on the final morning, when a panel on Asia’s foreign-currency exposure turned into an unusually contentious discussion on the future of the U.S. dollar.

In front of CNBC cameras, Yu Yongding, an academic who was formerly an advisor to the Chinese central bank, got the discussion off on a decidedly bearish tone for the dollar, with strong criticism of public finances in the U.S.

“The U.S. has been running a current account deficit for more than 26 years now, and they are accumulating huge foreign debt, and now they are running huge budget deficits. According to very optimistic estimations, within ten years, they will continue to run budget deficits,” he said.

Yu said he strongly supports a proposal by People’s Bank of China Governor Zhou Xiaochuan to develop of a new international reserve currency based on Special Drawing Rights, a kind of synthetic currency created by the International Monetary Fund in the 1960s. But he acknowledged that the SDR cannot replace the US dollar “at this stage.”

World Economic Forum Competiveness Report drops US to #2

September 9, 8:26 AM

San Diego Economy Examiner

Mark Vargus

The World Economic Forum has produced a new study on the competitiveness of each of the worlds many nations. This report is available as a nearly 500 page pdf file, and shows some surprising elements as they downgraded the US from the most competitive economy in the world to second behind Switzerland.

And competitiveness is important as the report writer notes in the first pages as he writes:

Competitive economies are those that have in place factors driving the productivity enhancements on which their present and future prosperity is built.

And this has been the great advantage the US has maintained in the economic world and part of why the US economy is bigger than the combined economies of Japan and China (the nations with the #2 and #3 economies by annual GDP). Actually you could add in Germany (#4) and the UK and only barely beat the US. But the report indicates that the economists of the World Economic Forum are worried about the situation in the US.

Their analysis is simple, but elegant and they note:

We define competitiveness as the set of institutions, policies, and factors that determine the level of productivity of a country. The level of productivity, in turn, sets the sustainable level of prosperity that can be earned by an economy.

It’s a good point. And plays into the analysis.

Europe Leads Overhaul of Global Financial System
June 16, 2009 | From theTrumpet.com

The European Union is taking the lead in reforming the world’s financial system. The EU is the first power bloc to respond to calls for more regulation and is passing laws that will affect businesses around the world.

The Washington Post reported Saturday:

The Europeans are now out front, for instance, in setting strict new standards for rating agencies and risk management at firms selling mortgage-backed securities. Europe has also seized the initiative in developing new rules to monitor hedge funds while forging ahead this week with plans to create two new powerful regulatory agencies in Europe, according to analysts and regulators. …

The campaign across the Atlantic has global implications, in large part because even firms based in the United States may be compelled to follow Europe’s tougher rules. For instance, under a draft proposal issued by the European Commission, the ruling body of the 27-member European Union, U.S. hedge funds may have to subject themselves to tight European oversight or be barred from doing business with European clients.

HONEST MONEY BILL - STATES MUST ADOPT

For many years, Dr. Edwin Vieira has worked with patriots in the State of New Hampshire to get what is called an 'honest money bill' through their General Court. Unfortunately, due to politics instead of reason and sanity, no version of the bill has passed. Here is a brief history of the drafting and the language. Additionally, please take the time over the weekend to read this important piece by James Turk.

Due to the persistence of patriots in the State of Indiana, an honest money bill was introduced recently in the state legislature:

A Devastating Parody Of Central Banking - Thanks Chris Powell at GATA!

Dear Friend of GATA and Gold:

A year ago "Newstopia," the weekly satirical comedy program of the Special Broadcasting Service in Australia, the public broadcasting network there, aired a 3 1/2-minute mock interview with an official of the Reserve Bank of Australia, the Australian central bank. It features the writer, actor, and comedian Shaun Micallef as the television newsman and Nicholas Bell as the RBA official, and it is a hysterical and devastating parody of the aloof smugness and imagined omnipotence of central banking.

It will be horrible if the work of these guys isn't brought to the Northern Hemisphere, and we have to chide our Australian friends for not bringing it to GATA's attention. Because of their subversiveness the "Newstopia" people might not be allowed into the United States, at least for another couple of weeks, but since Australia is a British Commonwealth nation, they'd probably have to be admitted to Britain, and what a delight if they were put in charge of the Financial Times.

Make sure to watch it to the very end:)

Boo!!!! World's Scariest Stock: Citigroup

Bat got your tongue?

What scares me about Citigroup (NYSE: C)?

Let's start with the obvious ... it's a bank.

I could probably stop there and gain the agreement of most investors, but I'll try to elaborate.

The beginning of the end

To understand the magnitude of Citi's woes, we have to go back to the late '90s. The repeal of the Glass-Steagall act -- a depression-era law designed to protect investors -- paved the way for Citicorp to merge with Travelers Group, forming what we now know as Citigroup ... the granddaddy of "supermarket" banks.

The idea seemed brilliant at the time: Slap every financial product you can think of together, forming a do-it-all behemoth where average Joes could deposit their paychecks, insure their car, and plan for retirement, while investment mavens could structure CDOs, form IPOs, peddle ARSs, and advise CEOs on mergers and acquisitions, all under one roof.

For about a decade, it worked beautifully. Shares tripled from 1997 to 2007, buoyed by juicy dividends. At one point, Citigroup even held the glamorous title of "world's largest company," a colossal giant home to trillions in assets and tens of billions in profits that could do no wrong.

And then the house of cards crumbled.

One heckuva Frankenstein

Free market ideology melts down

An investor looks at an electronic board showing stock information at a brokerage house in Wuhan, Hubei province.

China's stock market tumbles.

by Dean Baker

The near collapse of the world banking system and the internationally coordinated government rescue should put to end illusions about the unfettered market. Over the last three decades there has been an enormous upward redistribution of income in the United States and many other countries. This redistribution of income was justified as being the result of the efficient working of the free market. After this massive government intervention to rescue the banks from their own actions, such claims are no longer plausible.

Hoarding Opium/Heroin/Cocaine And Gold: A Testimony To Reality

THE HIDDEN GOLD PREMIUM

By: Michael Ruppert

-- Congratulations to Jamey Hecht

Last night a whole lot became clear about what's going on with gold prices. Not everything is explained but much more of the map has been filled in.

I was at the wedding of former FTW writer Jamey Hecht who also edited"Rubicon" for me. He and his new wife Sava were just beautiful together and the ceremony, at a time of great fear, was a welcome relief for all of us. It was probably the most beautiful wedding I've ever attended and I know we all send Jamey and Sava Hecht our best wishes. They are an amazing pair.

Seated at my table was an executive for a precious metals company. What he told me was something I have seen suggestions of, but nothing made it as clear as his explanation.

1. There's virtually no gold out there to ship, at any price.

2. Major dealers are paying some serious premiums to actually get physical gold. I was told that currently the major vendors are paying a $70 an ounce premium over spot price when they order lots of 5,000 or more ounces. Order fewer than 5,000 ounces and the premiums are much higher and even then there's no guarantee of delivery. So what's being charged small retail customers who just want an ounce or two? The best answer I could come up with is "whatever the markets will bear". So the so-called posted spot price is now meaningless and I smell a possible (I emphasize "possible") embryonic black market for gold emerging. That is something I hadn't expected for a couple of years yet.

3. Even with the premiums there is so little actual gold available to ship that half the big companies have stopped writing orders because they don't know if they'll ever be able to deliver. The other half are still writing orders on the hopes that they will get some gold --sometime.

4. The credit crash has made it difficult for large vendors to get float loans to finance purchases and expensive delivery and insurance costs. The only gold out there is dealer-to-dealer or whatever is being sold by private holders.

The problem appears to be global.

That means that I could take one of my Maple Leaves, add maybe $100 to the spot price, then add the standard Maple Leaf premium of say $10 anounce and then go out and demand an even higher price based on which dealer needed the coin the most. I can easily add $120 an ounce over spot to arrive at a reasonable market price. The executive's words were "Nobody is paying attention to the spot price anymore. It doesn't mean anything."

That means that gold is being hoarded and kept off the market. There's only one reason for that IMO. Sure, one could argue that the hoarding is intended to drive up prices. But is that happening? Nope. Prices are low. What this says to me is that some with insider access are holding gold off the market pending a large breakout. When I suggested this the executive agreed instantly. It would have been like selling Iraqi oil at $40 a barrel instead of leaving it in the ground to sell at $80 or $100. Of course, that brings us smack dab into collision with the fact that plummeting oil prices are doing nothing to increase demand. TPTB and the economy itself have no choice but to unwind completely now. The plug was pulled too hard when oil hit $147. Whether that was inadvertent or intended we have yet to see but anyone hoping that falling oil prices will stabilize things is drinking some real bad Kool Aid.

Gold's breakout will be much different than what's happening with oil.

So we have opium/heroin/cocaine and gold being withheld from the markets at a time when cash is in short supply and credit is virtually non-existent. That confirms my position -- a position shared by many economic experts -- that the worst economic news is yet to come. The executive agreed that a major breakout in gold prices is imminent.

Yes, as one poster observed on the blog, things are happening very quickly. This next week is likely to be very tough. When I saw the Wells Fargo chairman suggesting no bottom for six months I wondered how it could possibly take that long at the rate things are going."What'll be left in six months?", I asked myself. It's hard to say. I shared my analogy with the exec about how it seemed like the markets had dysentery and were on the verge of evacuating and he loved it."That's exactly it", he responded. "Very little is making sense anywhere and almost no one understands where they really stand. People are trying to redefine their positions at a time when there's nothing solid to stand on."

By definition then, we're a long way from the bottom. Because when the bottom is reached, everyone knows exactly where they stand... on the floor.

Right now all I'm focused on is getting through an election and an inauguration. I don't see any possible chance that anything remotely looking like a bottom -- with capitulation -- will happen before Bush and Cheney leave office. That's at least three months. It will be interesting to see if a strong psychological rally begins on November 5th. It will be a hollow rally and another round of folks going back to the bar after the Titanic has already been hit by the iceberg. In the meantime, those who get it are busy building lifeboats.

Stay low and stay dry. Make yourselves economically "small" in terms of exposure. I really believe the scariest part of this ride is yet tocome.

Oh, and for the person who yelled out that they wanted me to talk about ROOT CAUSES... That's all I have ever talked about. I wrote one book on them and published a newsletter that did nothing but talk about them for eight and a half years. You'll have a new book that talks more about them early next year. It will also more fully address the infinite growth paradigm.

Until you change the way money works, you change nothing. Money is still trying to work the way it has for more than a century -- but it's finding the resistance to that increasing as one paradigm ends and a new one begins. Let's pray that Alan Greenspan has an epiphany and suddenly remembers and understands what he did to help create this. I wonder if it will make him sleep better. Somehow I think he's sleeping pretty soundly. He did what he intended to do.

******************

JO wrote:

Some bullion now comes (if it comes at all) with a delivery period of up to three months and a hefty disclaimer: If they can't get a hold of the gold, you have the option of waiting another month or getting your money back; either the current price of the gold you'd contracted for or the price at which you bought it, whichever is higher.

What this means, of course, is that the dealers expect the price to remain suppressed for at least another three months, til the inauguration.

The schizoid disconnect between the suppressed price and the scarcity, even the unavailability of gold has been covered by GATA, the Gold Anti-Trust Association whose websites, for those who might be new to this game, are http://www.gata.org/ and http://www.lemetropolecafe.com/

Global Financial Crisis: Does The World Need A New Banking 'Policeman'?

With war raging across the globe in July 1944, ministers from all 44 Allied nations met at the imposing Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, to thrash out a set of rules that would govern world finance once Hitler was defeated.

Knowing that greater international trade would help to prevent future wars, and determined to avoid another Great Depression, the delegates signed the Bretton Woods Agreements, creating the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. It was a big vision, driven by grand historical figures: Winston Churchill, Franklin D Roosevelt and the British economist John Maynard Keynes.

But a system that was designed 64 years ago has, not surprisingly, proved ill equipped to deal with the fiendishly complex practices of 21st-century banking that led to the current worldwide crisis.

Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil Part 2:

City Wolves, short-selling and the Church of England

Some readers may be excited by the fact that Tory donors have sold some equities short during the recent financial crisis. That may seem like a gift to Labour during these perilous times.

But this is a time for cool heads. Bear in mind that the last high-minded group to attack short-sellers - the Church of England - was revealed as hypocritical last week when it emerged that its own investment arm uses similar practices.

Not only does the church lend stocks to short-sellers but…I quote…

As well as aiding shorting by lending stock, the church commissioners had £13m invested in Man Group, the biggest listed hedge fund manager, at the end of last year. The commissioners also sold a £135m mortgage portfolio last year, says their annual report, despite Dr Williams’ criticism of trading debts for profit.

“Through the Church of England pensions board, which manages another £847m, the church invested this year in a fund from Auriel Capital, a London hedge fund, which aims to make money from currency trading - including short selling currencies.”

Church Of England Admits Profiting From Short Selling

The Church of England has admitted it may have profited from the controversial practice of short selling on the stock market just a day after it was condemned by The Archbishop of York.

Managers of the Church's £5 billion investment portfolio have lent shares for a fee. It is possible they were used by traders to make profits by betting that the value of the stocks will fall.

Such trading in the shares of financial companies has been temporarily banned by the Financial Services Authority after it was blamed for driving down the share price of Halifax Bank of Scotland, which came close to collapse before it was taken over by Lloyds TSB last week.

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, described short sellers as "bank robbers and asset strippers" earlier this week, while the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, condemned the "basic unreality" of the global trade in debts.
