Tensions Linger as Pope Readies for Synagogue Visit

VATICAN CITY (RNS) When Pope Benedict XVI visits Rome's main synagogue next Sunday (Jan. 17) to mark Italy's 21st annual Day of Jewish-Christian Reflection, the setting alone will reflect a momentous event in Jewish-Catholic relations.

The Great Synagogue of Rome stands inside the city's former Jewish ghetto, where for centuries (from 1555 to 1870) Rome's Jews lived behind locked gates and were treated as pariahs by orders of the Vatican.

In going there now, Benedict follows in the footsteps of his predecessor Pope John Paul II, whose 1986 visit was the first time a pope had entered a Jewish house of worship since the early centuries of Christianity.

Benedict's repeat visit represents the "institutionalization" of John Paul's historic overture, setting a precedent that "will be very hard for any successor to ignore," said Rabbi David Rosen, director of interreligious affairs for the American Jewish Committee.

Still, Benedict's visit also comes at a moment of heightened tension between Jews and the Catholic Church. Several recent controversies have raised doubts -- which Rosen calls "unjustified" -- about Benedict's commitment to strong relations between the two faiths.

Vatican Defied Over Rebel Catholic Ordinations

• Society of St Pius X plans to ordain more than 20 men
• Holy See condemns 'illegitimate' ceremony

A rebel Catholic sect is defying the Vatican by pressing ahead with plans to ordain more than 20 men as priests and deacons.

The Society of St Pius X, which rose to notoriety this year when it emerged that one of its members, Richard Williamson, was a Holocaust denier, said it would proceed with this month's ordinations in Germany, Switzerland and the US in spite of the Vatican insisting they are "illegitimate".

A statement posted on an SSPX website questioned whether, in an era of plummeting numbers in the priesthood, the Vatican was wise in attempting to frustrate the ambitions of men who wished to serve the church.

It also denied the ordinations were intended as a snub to Benedict XVI, who plunged the church into crisis when he reversed the excommunication of Williamson and three other SSPX bishops.

Reported here by this author, accompanied with reader backlash at the time, back in April 2008, when Pope Benedict visited The Alliance Of Civilizations High Level Ranking Group Member Rabbi Arthur Schneier's Park East Synagogue, it seemed very surreal. Almost like a vision on a desert island looking far off in the distance over the ocean waves. Well, that vision continues to become nearer and nearer, clearer and clearer, step by step.

Both the Modernist German Pope and the AoC HLG Jewish Member Schneier expressed the hope that "dialogue between Catholics and Jews could emerge from the crisis even stronger."

As Schneier's Appeal Of Conscience foundation states, "A crime committed in the name of religion is the greatest crime against religion." We can safely say, much fruition of this statement will prophetically bear relevance for us all.

The convenient thesis and anti-thesis (insert ironic anti-Semitic resemblance here) confrontation because of partial holocaust denier Bishop Williamson has triggered SYNTHESIS.

Maaaaaan, you can't even think this stuff up for a Hollywood script let alone it happening in real life. That's right! you won't see this "script" on TBN.

Its in plain sight and at the same time so emotionally camouflaged.

Well, The Thought Police of AoC Tolerance grows. And we're all invited.

And yes, I expect, again, to be one of the few reporting and connecting these events sprinkled with the same backlash.
