Born in Philadelphia in 1929 and graduating from that city’s La Salle University in 1950, he joined the Paulist Fathers the same year. The Paulists are an order of Catholic priests dedicated to ministry to those outside their church through the media.

Paulist Father Ellwood (Bud) Kieser was the founder of Paulist Productions and the highly acclaimed television series Insight. Beginning in 1960 he worked in the entertainment community in Hollywood as a priest-producer, using television as a vehicle of spiritual enrichment.

In 1958, Father Kieser established an institute of adult education in theology intended for persons of all religions. He directed the institute until 1964.

In 1960, Kieser created Insight a television series designed to exploit the humanizing potential of television and use it as a vehicle of spiritual education.

In 1972 and 1973 "Insight" won the Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Religious Programming.

In 1973, Kieser received a Ph.D. in the theology of communication from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. His dissertation was titled “Cinema as Religious Experience.”

In 1981 through 1984 "Insight" won the Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Religious Programming.

Tensions Linger as Pope Readies for Synagogue Visit

VATICAN CITY (RNS) When Pope Benedict XVI visits Rome's main synagogue next Sunday (Jan. 17) to mark Italy's 21st annual Day of Jewish-Christian Reflection, the setting alone will reflect a momentous event in Jewish-Catholic relations.

The Great Synagogue of Rome stands inside the city's former Jewish ghetto, where for centuries (from 1555 to 1870) Rome's Jews lived behind locked gates and were treated as pariahs by orders of the Vatican.

In going there now, Benedict follows in the footsteps of his predecessor Pope John Paul II, whose 1986 visit was the first time a pope had entered a Jewish house of worship since the early centuries of Christianity.

Benedict's repeat visit represents the "institutionalization" of John Paul's historic overture, setting a precedent that "will be very hard for any successor to ignore," said Rabbi David Rosen, director of interreligious affairs for the American Jewish Committee.

Still, Benedict's visit also comes at a moment of heightened tension between Jews and the Catholic Church. Several recent controversies have raised doubts -- which Rosen calls "unjustified" -- about Benedict's commitment to strong relations between the two faiths.

Just where does Europe’s most powerful nation figure in the fallout following the appointment of the EU’s new president and foreign minister?

Those who watch what happens on the surface in Europe were left scratching their heads over the appointment of two unknowns to the two top positions created by the Lisbon Treaty/EU constitution. Dig below the surface, however, and the plot becomes clearer.

To really appreciate what is happening in Europe today, and in Germany in particular, one needs a historical perspective. But that perspective need not be long. Just a little over 100 years is sufficient. True, the political vision of Germany’s elites tracks back to Charlemagne in terms of its post-Roman Empire phase. Yet its true metamorphosis in a modern setting commences with the unification of Germany under Count Otto von Bismark.

Bismark was expert in creating alliances to favor German expansion by treaty. The strength of those alliances, as the French found out in 1871, was twofold. There was the power of the German military machine, especially its High Command. Then there was the influence of the elite bankers and industrialists who funded the war effort.

In terms of the process that seeks the extension of German power, nothing has really changed over the past 120 years. The European Union has been built via a series of treaties in which German politicians, its elite banker and industrialist cadre and its military officer cabal have, often behind the scenes, continued to wield primary influence.

Two entities have vied for power using the repetitively resurrecting Holy Roman Empire—the papacy and the German state.
