The Honest Steinmeier Brokers Five Point Plan For Gaza As Germany Deploys Troops To France For The First Time Since WWII

Germany proposes five-point plan to maintain Gaza truce.

Israeli troops are continuing their withdrawal from the Hamas-run Gaza strip, as a ceasefire appears to hold. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said that Israel is keen on getting out of Gaza as soon as possible, and other officials say troops should mostly be out by Tuesday. Hamas has promised to rearm irrespective of efforts to crack down on weapons smuggling. Meanwhile Germany's Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has proposed a five-point plan for the European Union to help keep the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The plan envisages the EU funding medical supplies, training security forces, providing damage assessment and a possible role at Gaza's border crossings with Israel. More than 1,300 Palestinians and 13 Israelis, including 10 soldiers were killed during Israel's three-week military campaign.

Technical experts from Germany are to travel to Egypt in the coming days to help secure its border with the Gaza Strip, an interior ministry official said.

Interior Ministry State Secretary August Hanning said the move to send police and interior ministry experts to Egypt would fulfill a request from the Egyptian government "to support securing Egypt's border area with German expertise."
