The Honest Steinmeier Brokers Egypt To Host Gaza Peace Talks

Steinmeier Welcomes Israeli Cease-Fire In Gaza

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has welcomed Israel's announcement of a unilateral cease-fire in the Gaza Strip.

Steinmeier said in a statement that the truce had raised the prospect of an end to the violence in the Palestinian territory.

The German foreign minister also called on the Islamist militant group Hamas to refrain from all acts of violence, including rocket attacks on Israeli territory.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon told reporters in Beirut that he was relieved about the news of the cease-fire.

Egypt has announced that it would host peace talks in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Sunday.

Among those planning to attend is German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
