"When Disaster Comes from Afar"
A conference marking 70 years since the beginning of World War II will commence today September 15, 2009 at 10 A.M. at the Diaspora Museum (Beth Hatefutsoth, the Museum of the Jewish People), on the campus of Tel Aviv University (Bnei Zion auditorium), Israel.
Several researchers will offer a contemporary look at a controversial issue: the attitude of the Yishuv pre-state Jewish establishment to the Holocaust (Do I hear an 80 year anniversary?) as it was happening. This question is also the focus of the collection of articles "When Disaster Comes from Afar" (in Hebrew), edited by Dina Porat and recently published by Yad Ben-Zvi.

Isaiah
10:1 "Woe to the ones writing wickedness; for the ones writing [wickedness are writing];
10:2 turning aside equity of the poor, snatching away a judgment of the needy of my people, so that [would be to them a widow] for ravaging, and an orphan for plunder.
10:3 And what will they do in the day of visitation? For the affliction [to you from a distance shall come], and to whom shall you take refuge for help? And where will you leave your glory,
10:4 to not fall into enslavement? For [underneath the ones being done away with they shall fall]. And for all these things [shall not turn his anger], but still his hand is high.
10:5 Woe to the Assyrians, the rod of my rage, and anger is in their hands.
