Matzah, the traditional flatbread eaten by Jewish people to commemorate Passover, decorated six circular tables, along with bitter herbs (maror), “mortar” for bricks (haroset), and green leafy vegetables (carpas). Around the tables, USDA employees, Administration officials, and a host of guests from the non-profit and Jewish community gathered to celebrate the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Justice Passover Seder.
A traditional seder is a ceremonial Jewish meal commemorating the Passover holiday and Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt after being freed from slavery. Tensions Linger as Pope Readies for Synagogue Visit

VATICAN CITY (RNS) When Pope Benedict XVI visits Rome's main synagogue next Sunday (Jan. 17) to mark Italy's 21st annual Day of Jewish-Christian Reflection, the setting alone will reflect a momentous event in Jewish-Catholic relations.
The Great Synagogue of Rome stands inside the city's former Jewish ghetto, where for centuries (from 1555 to 1870) Rome's Jews lived behind locked gates and were treated as pariahs by orders of the Vatican.
In going there now, Benedict follows in the footsteps of his predecessor Pope John Paul II, whose 1986 visit was the first time a pope had entered a Jewish house of worship since the early centuries of Christianity.
Benedict's repeat visit represents the "institutionalization" of John Paul's historic overture, setting a precedent that "will be very hard for any successor to ignore," said Rabbi David Rosen, director of interreligious affairs for the American Jewish Committee.
Still, Benedict's visit also comes at a moment of heightened tension between Jews and the Catholic Church. Several recent controversies have raised doubts -- which Rosen calls "unjustified" -- about Benedict's commitment to strong relations between the two faiths.

Interviewer: You mean in naming Major Hasan as the shooter and the only shooter?
Hoffman: Yes, that's part of it. Even if he was the gunman, however, even if he was indeed another lone nut, the precedent that's been set here by the government's mouthpiece corporate media is dreadful. They report as fact whatever the government chooses to tell them. Notice too that the Glenn Beck anti-government rebels believe the government in this Texas case, just like Beck believes the government narrative in the 9/11 attacks. It's remarkable, this bipolar suspension of the suspicion of government when it comes to official accounts of shootings, wars and terrorist attacks.
Interviewer: Anything else?
Hoffman: In addition to proclaiming Major Hasan guilty until proven innocent, the effect of Fort Hoodwink on the public, as filtered through the media, is to induce in the American people one of the lowest, dumbest, golem-like mentalities of obtuseness.
Interviewer: That's insulting to your fellow Americans.
Hoffman: They insult themselves by their behavior. A friend in California who is one of the few honest attorneys e-mailed me and pointed out that if there were two or more shooters, as eyewitnesses initially reported, then it could be that one or more of them is one of the "victims" mourned by Obama today.

Pope Benedict’s aggressive move to garner the wayward Anglican daughter of the church back into Rome’s fold is the latest outcome of the Vatican’s strategy to dominate global Christianity.
In a bold move, as swift and as sudden as a blitzkrieg frontal attack, Joseph Ratzinger, the Bavarian pope, has turned the tide against the wayward Protestant daughters of the Roman Catholic Church.
Striking at Anglo-Saxon Protestantism’s leading light, the Anglican Church, the pope took the battle right into Lambeth Palace’s front yard. In one sudden, surprise move, Ratzinger blindsided a weakened and divided Anglican community by offering a free ticket to Rome for all Anglicans who choose to reject the policies of their liberalized hierarchy. As has now been well publicized, the pope has offered membership of the church of Rome to those who choose to convert, with the historic concession that they may keep their Anglican practices and that married clergy may be accepted as priests in a newly established Catholic/Anglican community.

Pope Benedict opens new front in battle for the soul of two churches
The pope's offer to Church of England members to switch to the Vatican was ill thought-out and could signal a struggle for the soul of both churches
Over the centuries, the great church councils of Christian history have normally been held in magnificent echoing basilicas and stately palaces – but the church moves with the times. In 2003 a luxury hotel in Dallas, self-proclaimed as the largest in Texas (now that's big), hosted a gathering of very angry conservative American Anglicans, determined to do something about the consecration of a gay man, Gene Robinson, as a bishop of the US Episcopal church, sister church to the Church of England.
As they dithered about what doing something might mean, the delegates were electrified to receive an encouraging message from no less a figure than Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. This was remarkable, because Ratzinger was head of the Roman Catholic church's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith: what in less mealy-mouthed times was known as the Inquisition.

Tel Aviv making gay history. For the first ever time Israel will host an International Gay and Lesbian Tourism Association (IGLTA) convention, which will be attended by 20 travel agents from around the world specializing in gay tourism.
The conference will begin on Saturday and culminate in a symposium conducted at the gay community's center in Tel Aviv's Meir Park.
In any other office, this wouldn't seem remarkable. But this is the midtown Manhattan headquarters of Lucas Entertainment, one of the largest gay adult film companies in the world.
The yarmulke - worn in memory of a recently departed grandmother, it turns out - seems weirdly apt once you meet Michael Lucas, the 37-year-old founder and CEO of the 11-year-old porn conglomerate, which in August released what it claims is the first gay adult film made in Israel with an all-Israeli cast.

Obama and the Jews

One of the many paradoxes of contemporary American politics involves the Democratic Party's two most loyal constituency groups: African Americans and Jews. They have managed to stay under the same political tent even as their historic relationship has continued the long descent from the heights reached when the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel marched side-by-side in Selma, Ala.
In the decade or so since Louis Farrakhan's 1995 Million Man March, the best -- or worst -- that can be said about the relationship is that it has pretty much moved from mutual alienation to mutual indifference as black newspapers rarely mention Jews except to take potshots at Israel, and Jewish papers can be relied on only to ritually invoke King on his birthday.
Bill Clinton, the ultimate political empath, became a favorite of both groups without really bridging the growing rift between them. A crowning irony of the next presidential sweepstakes is that the contender who may have the best chance of restoring Black-Jewish enthusiasm for the same candidate has the middle name "Hussein," after his paternal grandfather.
Everybody by now knows the outlines of Barack Obama's odyssey as the Hawaiian-born son of a white Kansas mother and a Kenyan father who was educated early on in Indonesia (the home of his Muslim stepfather) as well as Honolulu, worked as a community organizer in Chicago (his real political education), graduated from Columbia University, became president of the Harvard Law Review and spent six years in the Illinois State Senate before his nationally acclaimed speech at the 2004 Democratic Convention and election that same year to the U.S. Senate.
Some pro-life Catholics are acting shocked that the Vatican warmly greeted the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to President Obama, who is pro-abortion. They don't seem to understand that the Vatican and Obama agree on most major international issues. This is the untold story-how Obama and the Vatican accept major ingredients of what has been called a New World Order (aka Global Governance).
Another untold story is how, despite a disagreement over abortion, the U.S. Catholic Bishops and the Obama Administration agree on major aspects of so-called health care reform.
These topics are mostly taboo in the liberal and conservative media. Liberal and conservative Catholics alike would prefer not to discuss how the Catholic Church, here and abroad, functions like a liberal/left-wing political lobby.
But the facts should not be much of a surprise. A majority of Catholics voted for Obama, despite the fact that his pro-abortion record was well known, and when he was honored at Notre Dame, the premier Catholic University in the U.S., only about one-third of U.S. Catholic Bishops publicly objected.

The religious right’s preferred presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee recently returned from a visit to Israel. What prompted Time to call it his first campaign stop in the 2012 race?
Until recently, leaders of the organized American Jewish Community were wary of a Huckabee presidential candidacy. His 2008 description of himself as a “Christian leader” raised hackles at both the American Jewish Committee and the Anti-Defamation League. Abe Foxman, director of the ADL, wrote an open letter to Huckabee in which he stated that “we presume you seek the presidency in order to be the leader of all Americans, regardless of the faith they hold.”

Why is Netanyahu courting Christian fundamentalists?

Benjamin Netanyahu has a problem. The Obama administration is insisting on a settlements freeze, and the Israeli prime minister, who is resisting such demands, is not getting the support he might have expected from the U.S. pro-Israel community. Usually, when an American President makes any sort of demand on Jerusalem, pro-Israel (primarily Jewish) organizations compel Congress to pressure the president to cease and desist. It usually works. But not this time.
So what's an Israeli leader to do? Netanyahu is resurrecting a tried and true strategy: Call on Christian fundamentalists -- who see maintaining Israel's occupation as paramount -- to galvanize popular pressure against Obama. But just like the last time he played this trick, the tactic is unlikely to work magic for Bibi anytime soon.

The United States falls one place to second position, with weakening in its financial markets and macroeconomic stability. Singapore, Sweden and Denmark round out the top five.
European economies continue to prevail in the top 10 with Finland, Germany and the Netherlands following suit.
The United Kingdom, while remaining very competitive, has continued its fall from last year, moving down one more place this year to 13th, mainly attributable to continuing weakening of its financial markets.
The rankings are calculated from both publicly available data and the Executive Opinion Survey, a comprehensive annual survey conducted by the World Economic Forum together with its network of Partner Institutes (leading research institutes and business organizations) in the countries covered by the Report.
Dollar Gets Roughed Up In Unusually Heated World Economic Forum Panel
Among the more interesting moments of the World Economic Forum that wrapped up Saturday in Dalian occurred on the final morning, when a panel on Asia’s foreign-currency exposure turned into an unusually contentious discussion on the future of the U.S. dollar.
In front of CNBC cameras, Yu Yongding, an academic who was formerly an advisor to the Chinese central bank, got the discussion off on a decidedly bearish tone for the dollar, with strong criticism of public finances in the U.S.
“The U.S. has been running a current account deficit for more than 26 years now, and they are accumulating huge foreign debt, and now they are running huge budget deficits. According to very optimistic estimations, within ten years, they will continue to run budget deficits,” he said.
Yu said he strongly supports a proposal by People’s Bank of China Governor Zhou Xiaochuan to develop of a new international reserve currency based on Special Drawing Rights, a kind of synthetic currency created by the International Monetary Fund in the 1960s. But he acknowledged that the SDR cannot replace the US dollar “at this stage.”

World Economic Forum Competiveness Report drops US to #2
The World Economic Forum has produced a new study on the competitiveness of each of the worlds many nations. This report is available as a nearly 500 page pdf file, and shows some surprising elements as they downgraded the US from the most competitive economy in the world to second behind Switzerland.
And competitiveness is important as the report writer notes in the first pages as he writes:
Competitive economies are those that have in place factors driving the productivity enhancements on which their present and future prosperity is built.
And this has been the great advantage the US has maintained in the economic world and part of why the US economy is bigger than the combined economies of Japan and China (the nations with the #2 and #3 economies by annual GDP). Actually you could add in Germany (#4) and the UK and only barely beat the US. But the report indicates that the economists of the World Economic Forum are worried about the situation in the US.
Their analysis is simple, but elegant and they note:
We define competitiveness as the set of institutions, policies, and factors that determine the level of productivity of a country. The level of productivity, in turn, sets the sustainable level of prosperity that can be earned by an economy.
It’s a good point. And plays into the analysis.

WASHINGTON — Tens of thousands of demonstrators descended on Capitol Hill Saturday, protesting the expansion of government spending and illustrating the network of conservative activists that has emerged in opposition to President Barack Obama's policies.

Organizers said they believed people from all 50 states came for the "Taxpayer March on Washington." Crowds filled nearly every pocket of open space near the west lawn of the Capitol, many standing and listening without a view of the stage. They marched from Freedom Plaza, adjacent to the White House, as shouts of "U.S.A." echoed through downtown Washington and marchers dressed as colonials banged drums. Some people stayed stranded on Constitution Avenue as the program began near the Capitol, unable to find room to watch the speakers.
A spokesman for D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services estimated the crowd at "in excess of 75,000" people. Local and federal law enforcement authorities don't provide crowd estimates.
The gathering was largely peaceful. Speakers and demonstrators said they opposed Democratic plans to overhaul health care, as well as the bank bailouts of the past year. "It's not about health care, it's about Obama seizing our freedom," said one sign. Opposition to climate-change bills moving through Congress was also on display, with coal workers in hard-hat helmets lining the front of the stage during a speech about energy.
WASHINGTON – The capital was rocked today by a taxpayer march and rally that could be the biggest protest ever – potentially dwarfing the Million Man March and the Promise Keepers Rally.
Though crowd estimates vary from as low as 60,000 to 70,000 according to ABC News to a high of 2 million by London Daily Mail, photographs and videos of the march and rally demonstrate its enormity.
The taxpayers stormed Washington, D.C., today, taking their fight against excessive spending, bailouts, growth of big government
and soaring deficits to the front door of the U.S. Capitol.
All week citizens have been heading to the Hill by the busloads for the showdown today. The Tea Party Patriots' "Tea Party Express" national bus tour has been hosting a series of tea party rallies all across the nation. A caravan of buses, speakers and entertainers arrived in Washington, D.C., just in time for the march. The taxpayers have paid their own way to the event.
The White House said Friday it was unaware of the rally. President Obama has traveled to Minneapolis, Minn., to promote his health-care plans at a rally there.
But so many taxpayers showed up on Pennsylvania Avenue that the crowd ran out of room and the march was forced to begin early.

Unfortunately, it appears that our fight has just begun. Late yesterday, Senator Baucus came out and said that a bill is close to leaving the finance committee. He will be sharing the bill with the "Gang of Six" and hopes to push something out of committee by Tuesday.
