Lag B’Omer: Of Mystics and Merriment

More than a million people visit annually, but it is during the 24-hour period of Lag B’Omer that the gravesite of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai really gets rocking. From Monday night until Tuesday, vibrations will echo through the hills as over 400,000 Jews converge in Meron to pray and party.

On his deathbed some 19 centuries ago, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, or the Rashbi, as he is commonly known, instructed his students to ensure that the date of his passing be forever a day of joy. Bonfires are lit in most Jewish communities, symbolizing the tremendous light the Rashbi’s Zohar, the sourcebook for Kabbalah, brought to the world. It is said that on the day of his passing, the Rashbi’s home was filled with such powerful illumination, that his students could not even look at him.

early 1600 years later, the Rashbi’s esotericisms were given new life, and a much broader audience, through the work of Chabad’s founder, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi. His monumental Tanya brought the second century sage’s writings to more concrete footing. Since then, Chabad leaders and rabbis have sought to spread the wisdom of Chasidism to the Jewish masses.

Perhaps they didn’t realize just how popular it would become.

Today “Kabbalah” is a buzzword, bandied about by celebrities and entrepreneurs, eager to exploit these sacred teachings. For the uninitiated, a sip of Kabbalah water or a wisp of Ketoret incense qualifies as the real thing. “Too many people run around using the name Kabbalah, without understanding what it means,” says Rabbi Asi Spiegel, director of Chabad of Eugene, Oregon. “It is like electricity; if someone doesn’t know how to use it, he can harm himself.”

Ehhhh, To Hell With Gaza, Again Part 2

Reconciliation Elusive During Pope Benedict's Peace Trip

‘No church bell would cease to ring had the Pontiff said something about Christian anti-Semitism. The verbal stinginess also diminishes the impact of anything Benedict XVI might say about Palestinian suffering. Had he said what he needed to about the Holocaust, he could have said more to condemn Israel's systematic violations of the human rights of the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.

To Hell With Gaza, Let's Go To The Holocaust Museum First

In May Pope Benedict XVI is scheduled to visit the Yad Vashem "Holocaust" museum commemorating events -- both real and imagined -- that are 65 years-old, but not Gaza, the site of the Israeli massacre that resulted in the slaughter of 1400 Palestinians three months ago, including hundreds of Palestinian children who were murdered by the pontiff's "Holocaust" hosts. The hypocrisy is breathtaking. --M. Hoffman

The Holy Land is scrambling in its preparations for the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI, pouring millions of dollars into infrastructure and security. It comes just nine years after his predecessor, John Paul II, made his historical visit. He will be traveling from May 8-15.
More than 1 million Christian pilgrims passed through Israel last year, and the tourism ministry is preparing for a spike in that number around the time of the pope’s visit. The pontiff will travel with heavy security, sometimes on new roads built specifically for him.

Pope Benedict will begin his trip with a few days inJordan. He is expected to give a speech at the ancient basilica on Mount Nebo that overlooks the Jordan River and Jerusalem. Mount Nebo is believed to be where the Prophet Moses died. The pope will also hold a mass at the Amman International Stadium.

Yad VashemOne of the pope’s first stops in Israel will be at the Jewish state’s memorial to victims of the Nazi Holocaust. It is particularly significant because of the controversy surrounding his decision to lift the excommunication of a bishop who denies the Holocaust. Pope Benedict later admitted the Vatican mishandled the affair. He will meet Jewish Holocaust survivors and attend a ceremony in the Hall of Remembrance, a common stop among visiting dignitaries. He will also plant a tree in a nearby forest.

Thanks Gort, Tim from Vermont and Deb.

Although the History's Channel "Banned From The Bible" series includes Jesus Seminar alumni and progressives on all sides of Judaism and Christendom, the rabbinic grip should enlighten most.

Marilyn Ferguson, the author of the 1980 bestseller "The Aquarian Conspiracy" and a galvanizing influence on participants in scores of alternative groups that coalesced as the New Age movement, died Oct. 19 at her home in Banning. She was 70.

The cause was believed to be a heart attack, said her son, Eric, of the adjacent Riverside County city of Beaumont.
