LOUISVILLE, Ky.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Vatican is asking a federal judge to reject an attempt to question Pope Benedict XVI under oath in a Kentucky sex abuse lawsuit. Attorneys for the Roman Catholic Church say there has been no evidence of a link to church officials in Rome.

The arguments were filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Louisville. They also say that forcing Benedict to give a deposition would violate international law.

The Kentucky lawsuit accuses the Vatican of orchestrating a coverup of priests sexually abusing children throughout the U.S.

Louisville attorney William McMurry has asked to depose Benedict and other Vatican officials. McMurry has also asked that the Vatican turn over administrative documents and respond to questions related to the abuse scandal in the U.S.

ROME -- Just as the massive TV trucks parked around Rome's synagogue obscured the sight of one of the city's most beautiful buildings, so too have news reports obscured the real importance of the pope's visit to the Jewish community here.

The Pope has criticised the failure by world leaders to agree to a new climate change treaty in Copenhagen last month.

He told nearly 100 ambassadors accredited to the Vatican that world leaders had a continuing responsibility towards preserving God's creation.

He criticised the "economic and political resistance" to fighting environmental degradation and creating a new climate treaty at Copenhagen.

Benedict XVI was speaking in his annual talk to the Vatican diplomatic corps.

December's summit in Denmark failed to create a successor to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol.

The Pope said the issue was particularly critical for island nations, and also for the African continent where the battle for resources and increasing desertification has led to armed conflicts.

Who do you think will emerge as the greatest climate hero of 2010? Al Gore? Robert Kennedy? Van Jones? Guess again... it's the Pope.

Though he has condemned those hippy nature-worshipping Avatar fans, Pope Benedict XVI has been quietly advocating for a healthier, greener lifestyle. Until now, his recommendations have been far from political but in a statement he made this week at an annual address to Vatican officials, the Pope is unleashing some shock and awe of the Catholic variety.

The Pope admonished world leaders for their failure to reach an agreement in Copenhagen. He also stated that the "self-centered and materialistic" motives which caused the economic meltdown could result in an environmental meltdown:

VATICAN CITY (RNS) When Pope Benedict XVI visits Rome's main synagogue next Sunday (Jan. 17) to mark Italy's 21st annual Day of Jewish-Christian Reflection, the setting alone will reflect a momentous event in Jewish-Catholic relations.

The Great Synagogue of Rome stands inside the city's former Jewish ghetto, where for centuries (from 1555 to 1870) Rome's Jews lived behind locked gates and were treated as pariahs by orders of the Vatican.

In going there now, Benedict follows in the footsteps of his predecessor Pope John Paul II, whose 1986 visit was the first time a pope had entered a Jewish house of worship since the early centuries of Christianity.

Benedict's repeat visit represents the "institutionalization" of John Paul's historic overture, setting a precedent that "will be very hard for any successor to ignore," said Rabbi David Rosen, director of interreligious affairs for the American Jewish Committee.

Still, Benedict's visit also comes at a moment of heightened tension between Jews and the Catholic Church. Several recent controversies have raised doubts -- which Rosen calls "unjustified" -- about Benedict's commitment to strong relations between the two faiths.

Just where does Europe’s most powerful nation figure in the fallout following the appointment of the EU’s new president and foreign minister?

Those who watch what happens on the surface in Europe were left scratching their heads over the appointment of two unknowns to the two top positions created by the Lisbon Treaty/EU constitution. Dig below the surface, however, and the plot becomes clearer.

To really appreciate what is happening in Europe today, and in Germany in particular, one needs a historical perspective. But that perspective need not be long. Just a little over 100 years is sufficient. True, the political vision of Germany’s elites tracks back to Charlemagne in terms of its post-Roman Empire phase. Yet its true metamorphosis in a modern setting commences with the unification of Germany under Count Otto von Bismark.

Bismark was expert in creating alliances to favor German expansion by treaty. The strength of those alliances, as the French found out in 1871, was twofold. There was the power of the German military machine, especially its High Command. Then there was the influence of the elite bankers and industrialists who funded the war effort.

In terms of the process that seeks the extension of German power, nothing has really changed over the past 120 years. The European Union has been built via a series of treaties in which German politicians, its elite banker and industrialist cadre and its military officer cabal have, often behind the scenes, continued to wield primary influence.

Two entities have vied for power using the repetitively resurrecting Holy Roman Empire—the papacy and the German state.

In a bold move, as swift and as sudden as a blitzkrieg frontal attack, Joseph Ratzinger, the Bavarian pope, has turned the tide against the wayward Protestant daughters of the Roman Catholic Church.

Striking at Anglo-Saxon Protestantism’s leading light, the Anglican Church, the pope took the battle right into Lambeth Palace’s front yard. In one sudden, surprise move, Ratzinger blindsided a weakened and divided Anglican community by offering a free ticket to Rome for all Anglicans who choose to reject the policies of their liberalized hierarchy. As has now been well publicized, the pope has offered membership of the church of Rome to those who choose to convert, with the historic concession that they may keep their Anglican practices and that married clergy may be accepted as priests in a newly established Catholic/Anglican community.

The pope's offer to Church of England members to switch to the Vatican was ill thought-out and could signal a struggle for the soul of both churches

Over the centuries, the great church councils of Christian history have normally been held in magnificent echoing basilicas and stately palaces – but the church moves with the times. In 2003 a luxury hotel in Dallas, self-proclaimed as the largest in Texas (now that's big), hosted a gathering of very angry conservative American Anglicans, determined to do something about the consecration of a gay man, Gene Robinson, as a bishop of the US Episcopal church, sister church to the Church of England.

As they dithered about what doing something might mean, the delegates were electrified to receive an encouraging message from no less a figure than Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. This was remarkable, because Ratzinger was head of the Roman Catholic church's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith: what in less mealy-mouthed times was known as the Inquisition.

The Holy Land is scrambling in its preparations for the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI, pouring millions of dollars into infrastructure and security. It comes just nine years after his predecessor, John Paul II, made his historical visit. He will be traveling from May 8-15.
More than 1 million Christian pilgrims passed through Israel last year, and the tourism ministry is preparing for a spike in that number around the time of the pope’s visit. The pontiff will travel with heavy security, sometimes on new roads built specifically for him.

Pope Benedict will begin his trip with a few days inJordan. He is expected to give a speech at the ancient basilica on Mount Nebo that overlooks the Jordan River and Jerusalem. Mount Nebo is believed to be where the Prophet Moses died. The pope will also hold a mass at the Amman International Stadium.

Yad Vashem — One of the pope’s first stops in Israel will be at the Jewish state’s memorial to victims of the Nazi Holocaust. It is particularly significant because of the controversy surrounding his decision to lift the excommunication of a bishop who denies the Holocaust. Pope Benedict later admitted the Vatican mishandled the affair. He will meet Jewish Holocaust survivors and attend a ceremony in the Hall of Remembrance, a common stop among visiting dignitaries. He will also plant a tree in a nearby forest.

A rabbi in Jerusalem has one request for Pope Benedict XVI when he visits the Western Wall in May: Leave the cross at home.

Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch, who will meet the pontiff when he visits the Holy Land on May 12, said that a cross is not proper when visiting the Jewish religious site, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The reason was an international agreement to allow for official atomic clocks to adjust to the world’s irregular but gradually slowing rotation. So a leap second was inserted between 2008 and 2009.

It may have appeared to outsiders that time occasionally stood still for those who have been the prime movers behind the rebuilding of Europe into an imperial force yet again, following World War ii. Indeed, it has taken 63 years since the fascist elites went underground for them to pursue their goal of reviving the Holy Roman Empire.

Yet, time has certainly not stood still for those of the World War ii generation who went underground in 1944 to recast their plans for world dominion following the failed Nazi/fascist attempt, nor for the next generation to whom they handed on the baton, to keep the imperial Germanic/Roman dream alive.

The collapse of the last bastion of freedom in the world, the Anglo-Saxon nations—led by the rapid decline of the British Empire over 50 years ago and now accelerated by the sudden collapse of the United States—has opened a vast geopolitical vacuum to be filled. 2009 may well be the year when the European Union suddenly leaps into view to be seen by all as that which it was always destined to become: the final resurrection of the Holy Roman Empire!

Sainthood For Pope Pius XII "UNACCEPTABLE!", Israeli Minister Says

An Israeli cabinet minister stepped into a row with the Vatican today, saying it was "unacceptable" to consider canonising Pius XII, who was pope during the second world war and has been criticised by some for not publicly opposing the Holocaust.

In an interview with the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz, Isaac Herzog, Israel's social affairs minister, who is responsible for relations with Christian communities, said efforts to turn Pius into a saint were "an exploitation of forgetfulness and lack of awareness".

He accused Pius of having kept silent during the war. "Throughout the period of the Holocaust, the Vatican knew very well what was happening in Europe," Herzog told the paper. "Yet there is no evidence of any step being taken by the pope, as the stature of the Holy See should have mandated ... Instead of acting according to the biblical verse 'thou shalt not stand against the blood of thy neighbour' the pope kept silent - and perhaps even worse."

The Chief Rabbi of Rome claims the televised event, which begins with the Pope reading Genesis, will be "too Catholic"

The chief Rabbi of Rome, Riccardo Di Segni, has pulled out of a planned marathon reading of the entire Bible on Italian television with Pope Benedict XVI next month on the grounds that the event is "too Catholic".

The reading, which will last 140 hours, will be broadcast on RAI, Italian state television, over six days and nights starting on October 5. It will open with the Pope reading from Genesis. The pontiff will be followed by 1,300 readers drawn not only from Christian ranks - including Protestant and Orthodox churches - but also from Rome's Muslim community.

However, Rabbi di Segni said "The Bible is not the same thing for Jews and for Christians. For us, it is the Old Testament, but not the New Testament". He said he also objected to the choice of venue, the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme - one of the seven pilgrim churches of Rome - because it was where St Helena, mother of the Roman emperor Constantine, brought Christian relics such as fragments of the True Cross back from the Holy Land to underline the fact that the centre of the new religion - Christianity - was not Jerusalem but Rome.

Pope Benedict xvi defended his World War ii-era predecessor last Thursday against critics who say the Vatican turned a blind eye to the Holocaust. Moreover, Benedict praised Pope Pius xii for being “courageous” in trying to save Jews.

“Wherever possible he spared no effort in intervening in their favor either directly or through instructions given to other individuals or to institutions of the Catholic Church,” Benedict said.

During the mid-1990s, author John Cornwell also set out to defend Pius’s reputation, believing if the full story were told, his “pontificate would be vindicated.” Accordingly, Cornwell applied for and was granted exclusive access to the Vatican’s archives. He concluded his research in 1997 in a state of what he called “moral shock.” The material he gathered about Pius, from the Vatican’s own library, “amounted not to an exoneration but to a wider indictment,” he wrote in his 1999 book, Hitler’s Pope.
