(IsraelNN.com) Hundreds took part in the funeral on Saturday night of Rabbi Shalom Mordechai Hadaya, head of the Kabbalah Yeshiva Beit El in the Old City of Jerusalem.
Rabbi Hadaya passed away at the age of 84, leaving behind his wife Esther, five daughters and two sons.
Rabbi Hadaya was a scion to a family of Kabbalist rabbis who combined erudition in Jewish Law with mystical studies of the Kabbalah. His father, Rabbi Ovadiah, came to Israel from Syria and headed Yeshivat Beit El in the Old City for 30 years. After the Old City fell to the Jordanians in 1948, the yeshiva was re-established on Rashi St. in the western part of the city. The deceased, a noted Torah scholar, headed the yeshiva in recent years.

Passover is understood as the commemoration of the Israelites being led out of Egypt by Moses, after having been slaves under the pharaoh’s rule for hundreds of years. The kabbalists explain that in truth, the story of the Israelites in Egypt is the story of each one of us.
Egypt represents our negative ego, as the kabbalists call it, the desire to receive for the self alone, that part of us that pushes us to care only about ourselves and to disregard others.
The redemption from Egypt, then, is the process of transformation that each one of us is meant to go through throughout our lives so that we can achieve the blessings and fulfillment for which we are destined.
We are meant to diminish the power of “Egypt” and selfishness in ourselves and become a person more concerned with others, sharing more, caring more, and through this, awaken a great Light and blessings for ourselves.
From this we can understand the concept of eating kosher for Passover. During these days we refrain from eating leavened bread, that is, bread that has risen. Leavened bread represents our ego, our need to be known, to rise, to overtake others, all the negative aspects of ego and selfishness.
This time of year, then, is an important time of reflection — what is my “leavened bread;” what is it about myself that I want to refrain from, that I want to remove from my life?

| Rites designed to exorcise dybbuks have been performed many times in synagogues over the centuries. |
The head is covered by a hood, which has three holes for the eyes and nose, and the person at the center of the event moves helplessly, like an animal being led to the slaughter. In fact, he is undergoing an ancient ceremony designed to rid him of an evil spirit that has entered his body - a dybbuk. This, at least, is what the dozens of people who were gathered around him believed, as did hundreds of others converged at the entrance to the Hashalom Yeshiva in Jerusalem, where this dybbuk-exorcising ceremony was held some three months ago.
The possessed person, a Jew from Brazil, makes thick and gruff sounds; witnesses say that when he talks his tongue does not move. That is a sign that the transfigured soul of a sinful man who has died is speaking from this man's throat.
Rites designed to exorcise dybbuks have been performed many times in synagogues over the centuries, and are traditionally carried out before large audiences. To a certain extent, the fact that this ceremony was filmed and disseminated over the Internet is a contemporary interpretation, albeit a somewhat exaggerated one, of the traditional requirement that the rites be performed publicly. In the film, which can be viewed on YouTube, the kabbalist rabbi conducting the ceremony, Yitzhak Batzri, sings in a deep, authoritative and calm voice.

Pope Benedict’s aggressive move to garner the wayward Anglican daughter of the church back into Rome’s fold is the latest outcome of the Vatican’s strategy to dominate global Christianity. In a bold move, as swift and as sudden as a blitzkrieg frontal attack, Joseph Ratzinger, the Bavarian pope, has turned the tide against the wayward Protestant daughters of the Roman Catholic Church.
Striking at Anglo-Saxon Protestantism’s leading light, the Anglican Church, the pope took the battle right into Lambeth Palace’s front yard. In one sudden, surprise move, Ratzinger blindsided a weakened and divided Anglican community by offering a free ticket to Rome for all Anglicans who choose to reject the policies of their liberalized hierarchy. As has now been well publicized, the pope has offered membership of the church of Rome to those who choose to convert, with the historic concession that they may keep their Anglican practices and that married clergy may be accepted as priests in a newly established Catholic/Anglican community.

Universal Orlando unveiled details of the park, a 20-acre addition to its Islands of Adventure property, on Tuesday in a video presentation on the Web. The resort, owned by NBC Universal, secured the theme park rights to J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books in May 2007 but has been silent about specific plans until now.

Who needs Spider-Man and the Incredible Hulk when you have Harry Potter?
Amid speculation as to what Disney's announced $4-billion purchase of Marvel could mean to existing theme-park licenses, Universal Orlando today unveiled details for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, a 20-acre addition to its Islands of Adventure.
The rights to the $265-million "theme park within a theme park" were secured from author J.K. Rowling in 2007, but NBC Universal has managed to keep information about the project a secret.
Wizarding World, set to open next spring, is expected to give Islands of Adventure a much-needed boost. Despite popular theme rides like Jurassic Park and the Spider-Man and Hulk roller coasters, attendance has suffered, Media Decoder reports. About 5.3 million people visited the park in 2008, compared to 17 million at the nearby Magic Kingdom.

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israel's Supreme Court ordered Ashdod's chief rabbi to return a kashrut certificate to a bakery owned by a Jew for Jesus.
In Monday's decision, the court said that Pnina Conforty's religious beliefs did not render her Ashdod bakery unkosher.
Conforty, a Yemenite Jew, had her certificate removed by Rabbi Yosef Sheinen in 2006 when the Ashdod chief rabbi discovered that Conforty had embraced Jews for Jesus.

• Holy See condemns 'illegitimate' ceremony
A rebel Catholic sect is defying the Vatican by pressing ahead with plans to ordain more than 20 men as priests and deacons.
The Society of St Pius X, which rose to notoriety this year when it emerged that one of its members, Richard Williamson, was a Holocaust denier, said it would proceed with this month's ordinations in Germany, Switzerland and the US in spite of the Vatican insisting they are "illegitimate".
A statement posted on an SSPX website questioned whether, in an era of plummeting numbers in the priesthood, the Vatican was wise in attempting to frustrate the ambitions of men who wished to serve the church.
It also denied the ordinations were intended as a snub to Benedict XVI, who plunged the church into crisis when he reversed the excommunication of Williamson and three other SSPX bishops.

Yesterday President Obama was in Egypt to give a "watershed" speech to the Muslim world that was intended to demonstrate that the long, dark night of Israeli hegemony over the United States had come to an end, and that America was initiating a new era marked by fairness to both sides.
Let's be real. Ending Israeli hegemony and being genuinely fair to the Arab nation of peoples which the Orthodox rabbis denominate as "Amalek," would require a revolutionary break with Holocaustianity, the universal, de facto state religion of the Western world.

(lubavitch.com) More than a million people visit annually, but it is during the 24-hour period of Lag B’Omer that the gravesite of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai really gets rocking. From Monday night until Tuesday, vibrations will echo through the hills as over 400,000 Jews converge in Meron to pray and party.
On his deathbed some 19 centuries ago, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, or the Rashbi, as he is commonly known, instructed his students to ensure that the date of his passing be forever a day of joy. Bonfires are lit in most Jewish communities, symbolizing the tremendous light the Rashbi’s Zohar, the sourcebook for Kabbalah, brought to the world. It is said that on the day of his passing, the Rashbi’s home was filled with such powerful illumination, that his students could not even look at him.

early 1600 years later, the Rashbi’s esotericisms were given new life, and a much broader audience, through the work of Chabad’s founder, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi. His monumental Tanya brought the second century sage’s writings to more concrete footing. Since then, Chabad leaders and rabbis have sought to spread the wisdom of Chasidism to the Jewish masses.

Working with a ballistics expert, the 53-year-old French priest dug up the mass graves of Ukraine.
"Every village was a crime scene,” he says, “and each case was different because the heads of the killing squads had to take in all the different factors — the geography, the transport available, the proximity of partisans — before organising the most efficient massacre.”
As his work in the Nazi killing fields continues, he is convinced that the figure for the number of Jewish dead will have to be revised upwards.

'Jesus In Jeans' Sculpture Unveiled
A church in East Sussex has unveiled a Marcus Cornish bronze statue dubbed "Jesus in jeans" depicting Christ as a man of the 21st century.
Father David Buckley unveiled the £35,000 seven-foot high bronze statue at the Our Lady Immaculate and St Philip Neri Catholic church in Uckfield.
Cornish's sculpture was funded by money left by Winifred Gregory, 87, a member of the congregation who passed away last year.
Christ is wearing jeans and a shirt billowing in the wind while his hair and beard are neatly and fashionably trimmed.

At the age of 82, Pope Benedict XVI is about to be forced through a diplomatic minefield that would scare the wits out of a politician half his age. He will be in Israel and the Palestinian territories from May 11 to May 15, on a visit that the Israeli ministry is billing as a "bridge to peace".
Who will be advising the Pope in Israel?
Well, it could be. But both Jewish and Muslim ideologues are determined to stop the Pope crossing that bridge: either by smearing him as an anti-Semite or by making his visit to a Palestinian refugee camp look like a politically motivated reproach to Israel.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- The Vatican and Israel have reported significant progress in negotiations on an economic agreement on church fiscal and property issues.
At the same time, sources ruled out the possibility that an agreement could be reached before Pope Benedict XVI makes his Holy Land pilgrimage in mid-May.
The Vatican and Israeli members of a bilateral working commission met April 23 in Jerusalem and reported in a joint communique that "meaningful progress was achieved after receiving a report from a working group."

Newly published archaeological evidence attests to the fact that ancient Jews used human skulls in ceremonies, despite a strict Halakhic prohibition on touching human remains. British researcher Dan Levene from the University of Southampton published findings in Biblical Archaeological Review about the human skulls, known as incantation bowls, some of which bear inscriptions in Aramaic. The skulls were unearthed in present-day Iraq (formerly Babylonia) and are believed to have been used during the Talmudic era. At least one of them appears to be that of an anonymous woman. "When I presented these findings in Israel, people told me, 'It is not possible that this is Jewish,'" said Levene. "But it is certainly Jewish." The skulls, which date to the Talmudic era, (ca.500-200 C.E.), are believed to have been incantation bowls, the primary purpose of which was to ward off demons and ghosts. But on a day that is considered so sacred, people worship with bunny rabbits, hot cross buns and colored eggs. What do these things have to do with worshiping Jesus Christ or commemorating His resurrection?
